Finnish Space Weather Initiatives

Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), Geophysical Research Dept.

Actively researching space plasma physics, physics of planetary atmospheres, stratospheric physics, geomagnetism, and lightning physics.  

Space weather related activities include:

• Main responsible contributor to the IMAGE (International Monitor for Auroral Geomagnetic Effects) network.
• Maintainence of a number of digital all-sky cameras and radars.
• Production of geomagnetic charts
• Latest magnetic recordings from the Nurmijarvi Geophysical Observatory
  

The Department of Physics University of Helsinki

In 1997 the Department of Physics founded a Professorship in Space Physics. This is a joint Professorship and research is undertaken in collaboration with the Finnish space research group, the Geophysical Research Division of the Finnish Meteorological Institute [above]. Research centres on space plasma physics and Sun-Earth connections including the specific topic of space weather.
