1. Final Presentation Day at ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, 22 February 2011

A "Final Presentations Day" will be held on the afternoon of 22nd February at ESTEC in the Einstein lecture theatre, organised by ESA's Space Environments and Effects section. Three presentations are grouped around the theme of solar energetic particles (protons and electrons) and their modelling. The preliminary agenda is as follows.

2. Final Presentation: ESA Solar Energetic Particle Environment Modelling (SEPEM) Study

You are cordially invited to attend the final presentation of the ESA SEPEM study on 22 February 2011 at ESA/ESTEC.
The presentation will start at 13:30 and conclude by 16:00. All are welcome to attend, please inform Piers Jiggens in advance in order to register for site access.
The main objectives of the ESA Solar Energetic Particle Environment Modelling (SEPEM) project have been to create new engineering models and tools to address current and future needs, as well as simulate past events and future scenarios. Both statistical and physical modelling techniques have been addressed, covering SEP environments ranging from 0.2AU to 1.7AU. Essential supporting elements also developed within the framework of SEPEM have been the creation of a reference solar energetic particle dataset and a user-friendly webserver with access to the models being developed under this project and a number of industry standards. SEPEM moves beyond mission integrated fluence statistics to peak flux statistics and durations of high flux periods. Furthermore SEPEM has integrated effects tools to allow calculation of single event upset rate and radiation background for a variety of engineering scenarios.

3. JOB OPENING: Postdoc position on Space Physics, National Observatory of Athens, Greece

The Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (IAA) of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) in Athens, Greece, announces a position vacancy for a "Post-Doctoral Research Associate on Space Physics".
Funding is provided by an FP7 project in which IAA participates as a Principal Investigator. IAA is looking for a self-motivated individual who will conduct data analysis and interpretation of Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) measurements from instruments at various points in the 3-D Heliosphere (SOHO, ACE, STEREO, Ulysses), as well as complementary solar wind and magnetic field observations. The successful candidate will participate in the establishment of an operational European Space Weather Alert system to forecast SEP radiation storms, closely linked to Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), and magnetic storms.
Important aspects of the position are the following: the collection of event data for the SOHO era and their statistical analysis, a study of the causes of false alarms, the development of an SEP propagation model and its adaptation and optimisation for the purpose of forecasting the arrival of SEPs at the Earth or other specified locations in interplanetary space, a risk analysis to directly represent risks of radiation storms for particular applications e.g. assessment of the exposure risk for an unshielded astronaut during an extra-vehicular activity (EVA) in low Earth orbit, or for an astronaut on the surface of the Moon.
Experience in data visualization and the use of IDL or MATLAB is an asset. Visits to partner institutes for collaboration are foreseen for the successful candidate during the implementation of the project. Following a 6 month probation period, there will be possibility for 1, 2 or 3 year extension totally. Salaries will be 2000 euros per month.
