1. Announcement of the 24th Space Weather Working Team Meeting,
19th November 2008, Royal Library, Brussels during the ESWW5
**********************************************************************

From: Mike Hapgood

The Space Weather Working Team meeting will take place during the forthcoming European Space Weather Week in Brussels. The SWWT meeting is scheduled in the middle of the meeting: on the Wednesday evening (19 Nov) from 18:30 to 20:00.

A key item for this meeting will be to discuss the plans for a space weather element in the proposed ESA programme on Space Situational Awareness and identify existing resources that could potentially contribute to that programme. The meeting will also discuss nominations for the next Chair of SWWT. Mike Hapgood, the present Chair will step down at the spring SWWT meeting in 2009. A full meeting agenda will be circulated nearer the date.

Splinter Session

SPACE WEATHER INDICES AND PROXIES

Conveners:
M. Messerotti,
I. Tsagouri,
D. Boteler

Space Weather is determined by a complex variety of phenomena that occur at different spatial, temporal and energy scales in nonlinearly-coupled solar, interplanetary, magnetospheric, ionospheric and thermospheric environments.

The identification and use of physically significant indices and proxies is the only viable approach for providing an effective description and prediction of the phenomena at various time scales.

This splinter meeting is meant to be a discussion forum focused on the significance of indices and proxies presently in use, and on the adoption of new ones in view of a more comprehensive quantitative description of Space Weather phenomena, capable of improving both modeling and prediction operational frameworks.

3. ESA Young Graduation Trainee (YGT) Programme
**********************************************************************

From: Eamonn Daly

The ESA YGT recruitment exercise for appointments in 2009 will start soon. Opportunities will be published on the ESA web site around mid- November with applications due by mid-December. We know from past experience that it often difficult for applicants to navigate through the information to areas of interest in Space Environments and Effects, and Space Weather (see http://www.esa.int/TEC/Space_Environment/ ) and invite interested candidates in these areas to contact Eamonn Daly directly. We also ask members of the European space environments and effects community to pass on this information to potentially interested young people.

ESA's Young Graduate Trainee (YGT) programme offers recently graduated men and women, a one-year non-renewable appointment to give work experience and to prepare for future employment in space industry and/or research ( http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Careers_at_ESA/SEMRS5XO4HD_0.html). The programme is open to nationals of ESA Member States and its Cooperating States (see http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/About_ESA/SEMW16ARR1F_0.html ). Applicants should have just completed, or be in their final year, of a higher education course typically at Masters level.
