PSW1 - Space Weather: Preparing for The Next Solar Maximum
Conveners: David Boteler (NRCan, Ottawa) and Joe Kunches (NOAA, Boulder)
Space weather disturbances involve a chain of events from eruptions on the Sun, through propagation of interplanetary disturbances and interaction with the Earth's magnetosphere to their impact on the Earth environment. These environmental changes have a variety of impacts on technological systems: energetic particles damage satellite electronics, ionospheric disturbances disrupt radio communications and positioning, and magnetic disturbances induce currents that cause problems for power systems and pipelines. Many system operators want to know what activity levels they can expect during the next solar maximum, how much warning they will receive of specific events and how to assess the impacts on their systems. This session solicits papers dealing how new space science knowledge can be used to give better space weather forecasts or improve hazard assessments for particular systems. We also welcome case studies of space weather effects on particular systems and investigations aimed at mitigating the space weather effects.

Transforming Scientific Models into ISO Space Environment Standards

Dear Colleagues,
At COSPAR 2008, in Montreal, Canada, 13-20 July, a session
C01: Transforming Scientific Models into ISO Space Environment Standards is planned.
You are encouraged to submit abstracts of contributions related to the needs for environment standards and activities that address these needs, such as standard model development.
The abstract submission period will end on Sunday, February 24, 2008 at 23:59 CET.

Event description:
Information on space environmental conditions is needed during the
development of spacecraft and their operations. Environments of concern
include atmospheric, magnetic, plasma, energetic particle radiation and
particulates. The information, in the form of data or provided by models
is usually based on the results of scientific research. This event seeks
to foster exchanges between the user "engineering"community and the
provider "scientific" community. Contributions will discuss developments
of international standards, the user requirements and the on-going research
activities that can be transitioned to user-oriented enginering tools.

We are delighted to announce that a workshop on Coupling of Thunderstorms and Lightning Discharges to Near-Earth Space is to be held during the time period 23-27 June 2008 at the University of Corsica, Corte, France.
Transient Luminous Events and Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes are newly discovered processes that couple the troposphere to the upper atmosphere and near-Earth space. The aim of the workshop is to better understand and identify the various physical processes that couple thunderstorms to the Earth's upper atmosphere and ionosphere, and the effects of thunderstorm processes on the atmospheric composition and dynamics.
There will be a registration fee of 300 EURO. This will cover transportation to/from Bastia airport, welcome reception, coffee/tea breaks, five lunches, gala dinner, half-day field trip and conference proceedings. Limited funds may be available to provide partial travel support to those who otherwise would be unable to attend the workshop. More information will be available in the next couple of months.

Dear colleagues,
We invite you or your colleagues to submit a proposal to the newly funded Trans-National Access Program currently running at the European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) Association. This program (funded by the EU) provides funded access for scientists from the EU and associated countries (not already associated with EISCAT) to the EISCAT UHF, VHF radar and high power facilities in northern Scandinavia.
The funding includes travel to and from, accommodation and subsistence
for up to 1 week at the radar site. Support will also be available from
EISCAT scientists for experimental assistance.

The next deadline for submission is 1st April 2008, although there will
also be future calls for proposals.
